Resume a Failed Chrome Download with Firefox

It can be frustrating when a browser crashes in the middle of an important download. While Chrome can't resume an interrupted or failed download, Firefox browser can pick up right where you left off.

When a download crashes, Chrome leaves you with an incomplete .cr download file. You can use the data in that file to resume the download in Firefox:

  1. Re-open Chrome and copy the download URL, then paste it into Firefox.
  2. As the download starts in Firefox, pause it, and navigate to the folder where you're downloading the Firefox file.
  3. Copy the filename (without the .part extension) and delete the file.
  4. Navigate to the folder where you downloaded the Chrome .crdownload file, and rename the original .crdownload file so that it matches the .part file (including the .part extension). Then, resume the download in Firefox. You'll see the download start at the point where it had stopped in Chrome.

Ordinarily, you would either have to re-download the file from the beginning (a pain in the neck for larger files) or manage all your downloads through a download manager. This method gives you an alternative, time-saving option.
